Sherman's Army in Georgia
About North Georgia

I became interested in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign when I found out his army marched near a piece of property I own. When I began looking in books for the exact route of his army I became frustrated by the incomplete information. Can you tell me exactly where he marched?

General Sherman left Ringgold, Georgia early in May and moved 100,000 men divided into three armies south towards Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee in Dalton. Over the next 4 months they covered most of Northwest Georgia and almost all of the Atlanta area - west to Dallas, east to Stone Mountain, and south past Jonesboro.

When an army this size marches, it is impossible to tell exactly where it went, unless an officer recorded an incident that occurred. For example, when James Birdseye McPherson took the 23,000 man Army of the Tennessee south to Resaca, west of Taylor Ridge, there was an extended discussion covering the discovery of a major road south from the town of Villanow that did not appear on any maps. The Villanow General Store, which is still standing, is mentioned numerous times in the Official Records during this discussion. These records can offer insight into the exact whereabouts of Sherman's Army, but detailed information about the locations would consume an entire book - without describing the battles.
