Paizano's Italian Restaurant
About North Georgia

Paizanos Pizza, Norcross, Georgia
Paizanos Pizza, in Old Norcross
Quaint is the word that comes to mind when describing old town Norcross. Named for Atlanta Mayor Jonathan Norcross, the village is centered around the depot, but the busy streets bypassed this downtown area a long time ago. No matter, because the town is better for it. Located in the heart of this area is what we consider one of the best pizza restaurants in North Georgia, Paisano's. If you're a fan of New York style pizza, Paizano's should be on your "short list" as well.

Crust. There is a reason they call it crust. This means that the dough has been baked until the outside is crisp and hot although there is an element of doughy inside. Sounds easy, but its not. The mozzarella cheese needs to be high quality, not some Pizza Hut clone. And the pizza-style tomato sauce should accent the pie, not dominate it. Paizano's has managed to combine the three basics of New York style pizza and come up with a winner. The pizza is topped with quality toppings as desired including meatballs, (not hamburger, thank you), pepperoni, mushrooms, garlic, black olives, eggplant, zucchini, Roma tomatoes, sausage, mixed or roasted red peppers, ham, broccoli, pineapple and bacon.

We always enjoy a good combination pizza and Paizano's menu has some excellent recommendations. Among the ones we find intriguing are the Bensonhurst, made with ricotta and meatballs, The Bronx bomber (pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, and prosciutto), and Midtown madness, a white pizza with zucchini and pesto. We also tried a pineapple and ham pizza (we have always called this a Hawaiian pizza) and it was excellent.

Have an Italian food lover in your group that doesn't crave pizza? Piazano's also offers a complete array of dishes for almost every palette. Try the calzone, once again cooked to a crusty finish, basted with oil and packed with a combination of ricotta and mozzarella cheese. Stromboli, too, takes on a unique flavor that won't be found in most other restaurants. Want an authentic meatball parmigiana hero? Give Paizano's a try. Of course, for the lunch crowd proprietor Charlie Conrose has included an array of both traditional and new favorites. Among our favorites are the turkey club (turkey, bacon and american cheese layered with lettuce, tomato and mayo on three slices of bread), the Chicken Caesar Wrap (delicious carmelized onion wrap with romaine, chicken and dressing), and an Eggplant Parmigiana Hero that was a surprising taste treat (Freshly breaded eggplant baked with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese on a hero).

All kinds of pasta are served: spaghetti, rigatoni, manicotti, lasagna, fettuccine, and ziti. The fettuccine Alfredo is classic, and the lasagna was also excellent. Entrees include Chicken Florentine and Zuppa di Pesce (mussels, clams, shrimp and calamari in a white wine or marinara sauce) . Top it off with a cannoli straight from Ferrara's Bakery in Manhattan or Tiramisu.

Directions

Directions:Take I-285 to Exit 31A/B Peachtree Industrial Boulevard North. When Peachtree Industrial splits with GA-141 you should be in the right lane. Make a right at the first light, Holcomb Bridge Road. Take it into Old Norcross. After crossing the railroad tracks, make an immediate left onto South Peachtree Street. Paizanos is one block straight ahead, at the end of the street. Nearby: Take a few minutes and a short hike to visit Labaire Pottery, in the middle of the block before Paizano's. We were greatly intrigued by the artistic rendition within this large shop.
