Lake Allatoona
About North Georgia

Overview

Lake Allatoona is the first Corps of Engineers lake built in the state of Georgia and is part of the Corps of Engineers, South Atlantic Division, Mobile District.

Location and description of Allatoona Dam

Allatoona Dam is located southeast of Cartersville, Georgia. The drainage area, according to the Corps of Engineers is 1,122 square miles of the southern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The purpose of the dam is to provide hydroelectric power, reduce flood risk in the Etowah River Valley and provide water for downstream navigation. In later years, recreation, water quality, fish and wildlife conservation and conservation of endangered and threatened species were added to the purpose statement.

Allatoona Lake extends 28 miles up the Etowah River bed and generates 82,200 kW of power weekly from the concrete dam. Three saddle dykes also help to contain the water.

History

As early as 1910 the Etowah River near the present-day dam was proposed as a good place for a dam. In the 1920s Georgia Power began studying the area in hopes of building a hydroelectric project. In 1934 the Corps of Engineers was ordered by Congress to study the Coosa River system for a hydroelectric plant and returned a document entitled "The Allatoona Project." In 1936 further studies of the project were ordered and in 1940 a recommendation for construction came from Washington calling the project the Allatoona Dam and Reservoir with the dual purpose of flood control and power generation.
