Death on I-75
About North Georgia

Thursday, March 14, 2002 - Shortly before 8 a.m. a dense fog covered a heavily traveled section of I-75 between Ringgold, Georgia Catoosa County and Chattanooga, Tennessee. In the rapidly forming fog more than 125 vehicles were involved in the worst traffic accident in the history of the state of Georgia, according to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright. One witness reported hearing the sounds of accidents for 10 minutes. Officers struggled throughout the day to free trapped motorists. A triage unit was established directly on I-75 to treat injured drivers. At least four people died and more than 20 others were sent to four area hospitals.

One officer on the scene commented that excessive speed played a part in the accident.

With this major north-south road shutdown, motorists clogged nearby roads for hours. U. S. Highway 41 was heavily impacted with local delays of more than 2 hours. Police were diverting traffic as far south as Cartersville, Georgia.

These photos were shot by an amateur photographer within minutes of the accident.
