Date error in biography of Elias Boudinot
About North Georgia

I was reading your page on the Trail of Tears and followed the link to Elias Boudinot. I think you might want to double check some of the dates that were used. You have him being born in 1800. How could he have been President of the United Sates in Congress Assembled and signed the Treaty of Paris, 1783?

Paul Kelly

Elias Boudinot, aka Buck Watie, took the elder Boudinot's name after befriending him on a visit to his New Jersey household. In addition to being President (which we mention in the article if you read it carefully), Boudinot was an early, strong advocate of equal treatment for blacks and American Indians. He was greatly impressed by young Buck's mental abilities and saw, before most, that this Cherokee had what it takes to be successful in any society.
