The Cherokee viewed the world as one. They believed they were related to all living creatures, not just other humans. For example, they blamed the smallpox epidemic on the whites because of the over-hunting and ecological imbalance they had caused (right people, wrong reason).
A shaman or priest/doctor was nearly as powerful as the Chief. Unfortunately, during the aforementioned epidemic the shaman were killed off as they tried to treat the disease. Those that lived through it were less highly respected.
The Cherokee believed that water was an important part of life. They ritualistically bathed in something akin to a religious service before battle or games.
When Christianity was introduced the Cherokee were Old Testament kind of people. They understood Vengeance, but could not conceive killing your own God, which is how they viewed Christianity.
