About North Georgia

General History

Chattanooga (Then & Now: Tennessee) Rob Clifton wrote this tome which features pictures from the past and (normally) the same view in the present. Originally published in 2007, the pictures show how the city has advanced since the "good old days."

Civil War

Mountains Touched with Fire: Chattanooga Besieged, 1863 Wiley Sword is one of easiest to read Civil War writers around, and this is our favorite book on the Battle of Chattanooga.

The Shipwreck of Their Hopes: THE BATTLES FOR CHATTANOOGA For the ease with which Wiley Sword tells the story of the Battle of Chattanooga, Peter Cozzens retells with incredible detail. Chances are you will want to reread this book to get the whole story.

Six Armies in Tennessee: The Chickamauga and Chattanooga Campaigns Abraham Lincoln had done what he could, moving 20,000 men under the command of Joseph Hooker to Stevenson, Alabama to support the Army of the Cumberland. Ulysses S. Grant came east with the Army of the Tennessee. William Tecumseh Sherman and the Army of the Mississippi would follow shortly. Meanwhile, Confederates controlled Lookout Mountain with the similarly named Army of Tennessee and Longstreet's Corp from the Army of Northern Virginia.

Chattanooga: A Death Grip on the Confederacy by James Lee McDonough. Starting with the defeat of Rosecrans' forces during the Battle of Chickamauga, McDonough carries us through both military and political action leading up to the battle, and details complex situations with ease.
