About North Georgia, Fall, 2013
About North Georgia

150 years ago the Union Army invaded North Georgia.

Chickamauga

The bloodiest 2-day battle in American History occurred in Walker and Chattooga County on September 19 and 20, 1863. We have completely updated our original 1998 article on the Confederate victory in northwest Georgia in time for the Sesquicentennial.

Orchard Knob

Having relieved the Confederate siege of Chattanooga, Grant had two divisions move against 2 Alabama regiments to take Orchard Knob, a small hill in front of Missionary Ridge.

Battle of Lookout Mountain

Also known at the Battle Above the Clouds, Lookout Mountain was a celebrated victory for Joseph Hooker, although Ulysses S. Grant thought the battle was "all romance"

Western and Atlantic Railroad in the Civil War

For more than 3 years the state of Georgia and the Confederate Army depended on the "State Line" to transport men, munitions and casualties within the state and beyond.

Trails of Kennesaw Mountain

Northwest of Atlanta the largest battle of the Atlanta Campaign has more than 16 miles of hiking trails.
